Hello,
My name is Kirsten Bowers and I am a public relations major in Northeast Ohio. I am a senior at Kent State University and plan to graduate in December 2014. I currently work as a Communications Intern at WKSU, an NPR radio station located in Kent, Ohio. In this position, I compile business and media lists, update the Artslink section of the website and write the weekly "Hot Picks" of fun things to do in the area.
I have also held two other communications positions. I was an intern with the Michigan-based non-profit the Good Girl Comeback, where I compiled media lists, wrote and distributed press releases and created FAQ videos. I also held a year-long position with the Communications Department for Kent State's College of Business Administration, where I was the coordinator for the public relations portion of the department. I wrote and distributed press releases, helped coordinate events, updated website content, wrote ad copy for promotional materials and wrote the content for the college newsletter.
In the spring 2013 semester, I participated in the national Bateman Casebook Competition. In the competition, teams are challenged to create, implement and evaluate a public relations campaign. Our task was to create an anti-bullying campaign and implement it in a local school. I took a leadership role in the research for our campaign. My team finished in second place out of 68 teams nationally.
I would not have had the opportunity to participate in the Bateman Competition if it were not for my involvement with Kent State’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). From August 2012 to May 2013, I served as one of our chapter’s Co-VPs of Fundraising. In this position, my co-officer and I were in charge of the chapter’s Homecoming Fundraiser. I helped organize, plan and execute a silent auction, which resulted in more than $2,000 raised.
I also served as the Intercampus Liaison for our chapter. One of my key duties was the planning and executing of our chapter’s Communications Connection, a networking event for students and professionals. Seventeen professionals and 66 students attended the 2013 Communications Connection and several students received interviews as a result of the event.
After graduation, I am interested in relocating outside of the Northeast Ohio area and pursuing a career in any sector of public relations.
